The new WWF ad campaign "OceanDetox"

On World Cleanup Day, WWF Germany and Savespecies will open the first exhibition space for a good cause in the Metaverse with #OceanDetox. The exhibition raises awareness of the global plastic trash epidemic and directly supports environmental protection by allowing people to freely walk around the virtual world created by the Savespecies artists. The exhibition's centerpiece is an anamorphic whale made up of 50 floating plastic garbage pieces. These intricate sculptures are available for purchase as digital art. Southeast Asia is a focal point of the worldwide plastic catastrophe; the digital art auction, for example, supports the WWF's mission to prevent the plastic flood in Vietnam.

WWF Germany achieved a new digital milestone last year with the multi-award-winning "Non-Fungible Animals" campaign, which combined NFTs made by artists and resource-saving blockchain technology to promote awareness for species protection and earn funds for WWF's species conservation programs. WWF is now taking the next step in bringing art and environmental conservation together in the Metaverse, in collaboration with Savespecies and the Journee technology startup.

The WWF warns of an impending worsening of the garbage catastrophe, estimating that up to 23 million tonnes of plastic trash from land end up in the world's oceans yearly, equivalent to approximately two truckloads per minute. Animals become entangled in this garbage, such as old fishing nets, or mistake it for food and often perish in agony. It is estimated that 90% of seabirds and half of all sea turtles already consume plastic fragments. Over time, plastic trash decomposes into smaller and smaller microplastic particles that can no longer be removed from the water and accumulate in the food chain.
