Desertification is a complex phenomenon of the gradual transformation of land with fertile soils into deserts, determined by climate change and land overexploitation. Globally, desertification is advancing by about 50,000 km2 per year. The sands of the Sahara are advancing south by 1.5-10 km/year.

The main cause of desertification is the removal of vegetation. Vegetation removal is determined by climate change, arable land cultivation, overgrazing and deforestation.
