La Parole Aux Sourds: "Unsilenced" by BETC

Discover Unsilenced, a unique collaboration between the French-Americanelectro band Haute (who composed the music) and the English dancer Billy Read(who wrote the lyrics and interpreted them in the music video).

All black and white, the video is visually striking, featuring Billy’sexpressive and emotional dance style as he moves with the suggestive instrumentaltunes to the backdrop of the Olympiades neighborhood in Paris.

The stunning video was directed by Alban Coret from Insurrection films, the powerhousebehind music videos for Drake, Alt-J and Travis Scott among others.

Now what if we would tell you that thisisn’t a music video for an instrumental song?

Billy is in fact deaf and isactually sign-singing the lyrics,that he wrote by using his sense of touch to feel the rhythm of themusic, said of the dance: “The hardest part of performing Unsilenced was thatmy hands were singing while my feet were listening for the beat.”

BETC Paris and non-profit La Parole aux Sourds (“A Microphone for theDeaf”) are behind the project, that continues on Unsilenced.fr,an interactive website that lets theviewer discover the lyrics to the song, and those who wish can make adonation to support the work of the organization and their work to build bridgesbetween the deaf and the hearing community.

The first of its kind, Unsilenced is an original track with lyrics “sung” through a combination of sign language and dance. The development of the music and movements required a carefully orchestrated collaboration between deaf dancer Billy Read and electronic duo Haute.
